Subir Sarkar the 4th Winner of the IUPAP-TIFR Homi Bhabha Award 2017
Prof. Subir Sarkar, University of Oxford, United Kingdom and Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark is the winner of the 4th IUPAP-TIFR Homi Bhabha award and prize.

The award citation and medal will be presented to Prof. Sarkar during the inauguration function of the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Busan, South Korea on 20 July 2017.
About the IUPAP-TIFR Homi Bhabha Award
The IUPAP-TIFR Homi Bhabha Award was established by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai (India), and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in the year 2010 as part of the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, who founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1945. He was a renowned cosmic ray physicist, known for his path-breaking contributions including the Bhabha-Heitler Cascade theory, and the relativistic electron-positron scattering also known as the Bhabha scattering. Dr. Bhabha also initiated the atomic energy program in India and laid the foundation for much of the modern scientific research in post-independence India. Dr. Bhabha initiated large-scale experimental programs for the study of cosmic rays and their interactions with instruments flown aboard balloons, and in the laboratories both at high altitude as well as deep underground.
The Homi Bhabha Award consists of a certificate, a medal, and a cheque for Indian Rupees 2,50,000 with an invitation to visit TIFR, Mumbai, and the Cosmic Ray Laboratory (CRL), Ooty to deliver public lectures. It will be awarded biennially at the International Cosmic Ray Conferences (ICRCs), held during odd-numbered years.
The IUPAP-TIFR Homi Bhabha Award, and Prize will be awarded to an active scientist who has made distinguished contributions in any field of cosmic ray physics over an extended academic career. The winner of the prize will be selected by a jury comprising of the members of the C4 Commission of IUPAP, and Prof. Sunil K. Gupta, a senior cosmic ray physicist nominated by the Director, TIFR.
