Joint Discovery - HET seminar by Peter Skands (CERN)

Speaker: Peter Skands (CERN)

Title: Solving the LHC

Abstract: A new era of theory-experiment interplay began on July 4th, with the announcement of the discovery of a Higgs-like state at CERN. Many are hoping this is just the kickoff, with more discoveries soon to follow, on Earth and in space. To extract the highest amount of information from the new data, accurate theory references are needed. I will discuss a newly developed formalism that combines fixed-order perturbative amplitudes with infinite-order resummations. The approach reaches computational speeds orders of magnitude faster than the current state of the art, allows automated and comprehensive theory-uncertainty estimates, and is embedded within a full-fledged simulation of high-energy interactions. If time allows, I will also discuss the relation between these calculations and the observable world, via the physics of hadronization and the so-called underlying event. Finally, I will touch on the world's first virtualization-based volunteer cloud, which was developed to validate these simulations.
